Visual Arts

The Cardin School’s extensive visual art program includes studio art classes, art electives, art minyanim, and integrated arts. The objectives for students involved in the visual arts are both traditional and holistic, reflecting the holistic mission of Cardin:

  • to develop drawing skills, including: drawing from observation, imagination, and from memory
  • to explore the possibilities of color mixing using a variety of media
  • to playfully experiment with ideas and materials
  • to create visually coherent 2- and 3-D artworks
  • to build narrative skills in the visual arts
  • to encourage internal motivation, self-direction, experimentation, and self-discipline in completing an art problem
  • to develop personal meaning through art
  • to empower students to respond visually and verbally to their daily lives
  • to link seemingly disparate subject areas through the arts
  • to develop enhanced critical thinking skills through art projects

Past art program highlights include:

  • Spring 2005 – The school was the recipient of a Baltimore Clayworks “Tour de Clay” education grant that permitted Artist-in-Residence Sam Wallace and eleven students to create a Raku clay Torah mural.
  • Spring 2007 – Four art students displayed their outstanding artwork in the Park Heights’ JCC’s professional gallery exhibition entitled “Of Doors and Keys.”
  • Spring 2008 – Nine Hebrew students created a large-scale mixed-media collage painting as a gift exchange with a sister school in Ashkelon, Israel.
