Standardized Testing

Admission to college is based on a number of factors, including standardized test scores. While some institutions no longer require standardized tests as part of their admissions criteria, many still do, so it’s important to be prepared. (For a list of test-optional institutions, go to the Fair Test website.)

The two major standardized tests to consider are:

  1. The SAT Reasoning Test, which is designed to measure critical reading, math, and writing skills. The SAT Subject Tests are hour-long subject exams that are used to measure student proficiency in specific areas.  Students should check individual school criteria regarding which (if any) SAT Subject Test is required for admissions.
  2. The ACT measures skills in English, math, reading, and science. A 30-minute Writing Test is optional for the ACT. Cardin students should always plan to utilize the writing option and take the ACT with Writing.

The Cardin School highly encourages all juniors to take both the ACT with Writing and the SAT Reasoning Test at least once during the spring of their junior year. Students should also take any appropriate SAT Reasoning Tests in the springs corresponding to their course work. Almost all colleges will accept either the ACT or the SAT Reasoning exam. Make sure to check specific institutional requirements before applying.

Preparation for standardized tests should not get in the way of school work and important activities. The Cardin School incorporates SAT/ACT preparation into the curriculum through an 11th grade elective course taught by expert standardized test teachers.

The Cardin School encourages students to take standardized tests on Sundays in observance of the Saturday Shabbat. Students should inquire in the office for proper documentation for Sunday test registration.

Test registration materials can be found in the counseling office or online. Students should visit The College Board for SAT test dates and ACT online for ACT test dates. The Shoshana S. Cardin School test code is: 210206.
