Message from the Director of Athletics

The athletic program of The Shoshana S. Cardin School is an important component of the overall school curriculum. Students participate in a program that reflects the school’s philosophy of diversity, continual growth and achievement, and our responsibility to do our part within a community. The athletic program also focuses on building good character and the positive attributes of sportsmanship. These habits established through healthy athletic competition – resilience, leadership, perseverance, and good sportsmanship – can be beneficial to the student in all arenas of life. It is the job of the director of athletics and the coaches to create, sustain, and enhance this learning environment.

By participating on a team, students learn that that they have a responsibility to themselves, their teammates, and their coaches to maximize the development of many interpersonal skills such as listening, expressing one’s opinion, following directions, accepting constructive criticism, and supporting the decisions of teammates and coaches. They can learn to set long-term goals, problem-solve in pressure-filled situations, and recognize the importance of honest effort, contribution, and sportsmanship.

Athletics is an extension of the classroom in which young people are challenged both mentally and physically in their pursuit of personal excellence. The athletic department works to reinforce the idea that while a good competitor always plays to win, that competitor also understands that the true measure for performance is not necessarily winning, but giving it his or her all.

I want to thank all the parents and fans for their continued support and attendance at all of our games. We take pride in establishing a sense of family and community in the sports program.
